Coolant compatibility

Never mix Coolant VCS (Yellow) with Coolant (Green). Always flush the entire cooling system before switching coolant types. Coolant VCS-2 (Yellow) is the current Volvo Penta recommendation.

Water for coolants

Concentrate coolants must be mixed with distilled or deionized water only (Pub. 47715294). Ordinary tap water contains minerals that damage seals and reduce heat transfer. Volvo Penta recommends 40% concentrate / 60% water for protection down to −25°C.

Engine oil grades

VDS-3 and VDS-4.5 15W-40 are the current standards for Volvo Penta diesel engines. VDS-4.5 10W-30 (e.g. P/N 23068339) is approved for emission-controlled engines and gives faster cold-start lubrication. Petrol engines use synthetic 5W-40 (ACEA, API SN).

Transmission oil

IPS and Aquamatic drives use synthetic 75W-90 (P/N 22479647 / 22479648 / 22479650). Heavy-duty transmissions use synthetic 75W-140 (P/N 22574246) or mineral 80W-90 GL-5 (P/N 3809445). ATF Dexron III is for power-trim and select drives.

Paints — engine vs drive

Paint is split into engine touch-up (greens, red, white, dark grey) and drive touch-up (silver, grey, black, clear). Modern drives like DPG, DPH, DPR, DPI, S-drives, IPS require silver + clear varnish (P/N 889968, 2-can kit).

Final selection

Always verify recommendations in Volvo Penta service and repair information for your specific engine and drive serial number. Storage temperature, marine environment and duty cycle affect product choice.
